Unfair trading
September 6th, 2004
| The Euro is such a benefit for those of us who frequently travel around the continent… I understand some countries have special affection to their past and want to keep their own currency. No problem so far.
What I do not understand is why on Earth some entities insist on making unfair profit from something as simple as currency exchange. This is especially true in England, where my bank’s currency exchange commission is as high as 2.75%. To illustrate this, for every 100€ I send from my bank account in Spain the bank here in the UK keeps almost 3€, not including the fees for receiving an international order (ha!). I have never seen such astronomical fees anywhere in the continent. My bank in Spain charges nothing for sending Euro transfers to any country in the EU. And 0.2% for currency exchange. Yeah, that’s ten times less than the equivalent in the UK. Amazing. Basically, some banks here in the UK charge you for breathing. |
