Salamanca’2002

A huge Swedish flag just in the middle of the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca. Such a weird situation could only have been possible with the crazy people that studied in Stockholm time ago. It’s hardly surprising that an intrigued newspaper photographer who was passing by took a photo of us for the local paper.

The reason for all this was an exchange student meeting which took place in Salamanca last weekend. Nearly thirty people from Italy, Germany, Sweden, Austria, France and Spain didn’t want to miss the event. We spent some time sightseeing in Salamanca, whose University became the equal of Oxford and Bologna in the 13th century. With no doubt, the beauty of its buildings are without equal in Spain. Although I couldn’t find the famous frog, David showed us the odd astronaut that conmemorates the landing of the Man on the Moon in the facade of the cathedral.

Don’t miss the photos!

Livin’ la vida loca

Sabine and Rafa have finally decided to pay us a visit. We couldn’t skip a bocadillo de calamares (squids sandwich) at El Brillante, just in front of the Atocha train station. After trying some nice sangrĂa, we ended up fighting to get a place in the sofa. The weather behaved and we enjoyed many of the landmarks in Madrid, including the famous El Retiro. On the other hand, this is my third visit to the Royal Palace in a month… kind of getting tired of it! All the photos are here.

The Strawberry Train

El tren de la fresa follows the old Madrid to Aranjuez rail route, the second railway to be built in Spain about 150 years ago. It earned its nickname because people from Aranjuez used it to take strawberries up to Madrid for sale. The steam engine, a Mikado model, was made in Spain by Euskalduna in year 1959. Have a look at the photos from this trip!

Busy days

The last three days have been very intensive. Sabine and Rafa came to Madrid on Tuesday. After visiting Madrid for two days I decided to join an Erasmus meeting in Salamanca, so I’m now writting from a ciber-cafe in front of their awesome cathedral. More concretely, the meeting is for people who were studying in Stockholm, and although I didn’t know most of them from their name, their faces were really familiar. Will upload some photos when I’m back to Madrid (probably on Sunday).

Coffee coffee!

It eventually happens that I don’t have any plans for the evening. When I was living in Stockholm it was easy: just go to the closest Wayne’s Coffee for a coffee with friends. Now I have found the equivalent in Madrid, Starbucks. While some people hate it for being a large multinational chain, I enjoy its comfortable seats, nice ambience music and -mostly- its great coffee. It seems I’m trying to get back those little important things I liked in Sweden.
